I know it's not a photograph and may be interpreted in a variety of ways, but that is why we are in this profession. Creativity and boundaries – crucial!

artin is a recent grad from ACAD. This animation was recently unveiled as part of the GIRAF Animation Festival. In Martin's words "This is an animation that I produced for a three month residency called the "Quicktrack" program. We were employed to create an animation that functions as a loop, is at least 90 seconds, and will be projected at a large scale. I was inspired by classic Japanese movies and graffiti art. After completion 6 Degrees sound studio scored the sound."

Opening Reception First Thursday July 7th, 5-9pm - show rund until Aug 26th

Laura Bifano is a painter and illustrator based out of Victoria, BC.

She is known for creating serene, whimsical and arresting imagery layered with hidden narrative and a touch of humor. Some of her commercial clients include Parcs Canada, Fort Langley National Historical Site, Cricket Magazine, Canadian Running Magazine, and the University of Alberta. Laura is a graduate of the Alberta College of Art and Design's Illustration program.

Her second solo show, "Menagerie," combines her love of naturalism and pop culture. "Menagerie" takes the vintage video game aesthetic and puts it in the context of a realistic environment, exploring our changing relationships with the natural world.

ACAD instructor Paul Bazay's company has created a simple, but clever product - Gridbooks. The book they are currently showcasing is the AD Book, This notebook is designed for web designers and advertising art directors. It features a 15-point dot grid that divides into four, five or six columns. It also includes storyboard outlines for three standard ad units: a leaderboard, skyscraper and big box. Opposite the grid, a notes page includes lined paper and a checklist for action items.

CHELSEA CARDINAL IS AN ACAD GRAD. After starting her design and illustration career in Calgary she made the leap to New York where she landed a coveted intern position at GQ Magazine. Under the direction of iconic creative director Fred Woodward, Chelsea’s career has taken off and she now holds an art director position at GQ. Her work has earned her recognition from many places including the Society of Publication Designers and Communication Arts Magazine. In addition to her work at GQ, Chelsea has a freelance illustration practice and this past year launched a clothing line “Alle Vögel”.

Chelsea will talk about being a Canadian living in New York and satisfying many creative masters. Her presentation will delve into her experience at GQ and what it is like to work for one of North America’s most renowned creative directors and publications.

I've been browsing for a new script font at myfonts.com, more than browsing actually, it's quite addictive. One of the fonts that caught my eyes is Calgary Script designed by Alejandro Paul. It was inspired by a visit to Calgary a few years ago for a talk Alejandro did at ACAD.

Society of Illustrators 2011 Student Scholarship Competition

2011 is the first year that illustration students from ACAD have competed in the Society of Illustrators Student Scholarship Competition. Every year since 1981 the Society has held the Student Scholarship Competition. Over a hundred works are chosen from more than 5,000 entries submitted by professors of college-level students nationwide. In a competition which can kick start a career, students bring their most sophisticated, well-crafted and original work to be tested. A jury of professional peers, including illustrators and art directors, selects the most outstanding works created throughout the year. Pieces are accepted based on the quality of technique, concept and skill of medium used.

Riley Rossmo and Cowboy Ninja Viking

ACAD alumni and former instructor Riley Rossmo's comic book series Cowboy Ninja Viking has been put into movie development by Disney and the screenplay is currently being written by Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

Cowboy Ninja Viking is published by Image Comics and is co-created by Riley Rossmo and AJ Lieberman. Riley's other series is Proof also published by Image Comics.

Ed Kwong in The Anthology Project Volume 2

The Anthology Project is a comic collective which debuted last year. The second issue is scheduled to be released this year. To get The Anthology Project Volume 2 going the creators, which includes ACAD alumni Joy Ang, used the popular Kickstarter funding platform to raise money. According to their Kickstarter page (HERE) they raised double their funding goal with over 200 backers pledging $14,000.

Last weekend I was thrilled to hear ACAD illustration grad Kelly Sutherland's Seven Story Redhead on CBC Radio 3. Later I stopped by my neighborhood magazine shop and found him again in the literary and arts magazine Filling Station. The latest issue (Nov 2010) is littered with his work including an artist feature. You will also see his work around town in the next month or so advertising this years One Yellow Rabbit's High Performance Rodeo. This is the second year he has worked on this exciting project.

Governor General's Literary Awards 2010 - Renata Liwska

ACAD alumni and faculty member Renata Liwska is a finalist for this years Governor General's Awards in the category of children's literature - illustration. She is nominated for The Quiet Book written by Deborah Underwood which debuted last spring at #5 on the New York Times Bestseller List and was on the list for 13 weeks. She was also recently awarded a gold medal from the prestigious Society of Illustrators in New York where she took the top prize in "The Original Art" an exhibit celebrating the fine art of children's book illustration, which is on display at the Museum of American Illustration at the Society of Illustrators in New York City from October 20 through November 24, 2010.

Lincoln has the unique accomplishment of earning a degree in both photography and illustration from ACAD. His first children's book Harry and Horsie written by Katie Van Camp was published by Harper Collins in 2009. Remember when you were a little kid - those big, flat drawings of death an destruction that could keep you going for ages? Me and a few other artists, as kind of a weekly relaxation ritual, go out and draw these big collaborative battles, complete with sound effects and blood spatters, occaisionally. After full days of drawing strictly designed, tightly thought-out stuff, it's super-relaxing to let go like this. One of the key parts of it, though, is that you have to draw direct from brain to paper - no time to think about what you're doing, and the coolness of it. Just DRAW!

ACAD alumni Brett McEwen is premiering his film "The Longest War" on Saturday Sept 25 at The Calgary International Film Festival. He produced and directed this documentary about the struggle of the Karen people in Burma (Myanmar). The film was written and filmed by journalist Nelson Rand. Originally from Calgary, Mr. Rand recently returned from Thailand to recover from injuries sustained from being shot while covering the Red Shirt Uprising in Bangkok that occurred earlier this year.

About the film:
The fight for an independent homeland automatically brings to mind the bitter and bloody clashes in places like Tibet, Palestine and even Quebec; but few will be familiar with the plight of the Karen of Burma, and their hard-fought battle for a Karen State in eastern Burma since 1949. Filmmaker Brett McEwen and cinematographer Nelson Rand risk life and limb documenting the world’s “longest war,” and bear witness to war crimes, human rights abuses and the destruction and murder of entire villages as the brutal military regime of Burma seeks to eradicate members of the Karen National Liberation Army and its supporters. This is a raw, first-hand account of a people struggling to free themselves from oppression in an area of the world most Canadians can’t find on a map.
